Presentation

The Triangle laboratory is organizing, jointly with the labotarory EVS and with the support of the MITI, a workshop on "Environmental contamination: measurement and participatory sciences" to be held on December 12, 2023 at Sciences Po Lyon.

In a large range of local and national situations of environmental contamination (water, soils, air), local communities face a lack of knowledge on the risk they are exposed to. The production of new data on the contamination itself or on its health effects thus appears as a crucial question in addressing these political issues. A recent example is the large pollution to poly- and perfluotoalkyl (PFAS) substances, also called “forever chemicals”.

This workshop focuses on a specific tool used in public policy to produce such data, namely “participatory” or “citizen” science studies. The notion refers to the more or less strong inclusion of the exposed communities in the construction of new scientific knowledge.

The presentations will address practical issues surrounding participatory science experience, as well as scientific research in human and social sciences. They will try to understand the successes and the blind spots in the methodologies used in several European countries, in order to better identify the capacity and limits of these participatory protocols in the way they address environmental inequalities.
